Denti-Cal and Dental Care: Common Questions from Rio Hondo Patients

Educational content; not a substitute for an exam. Not yet clinically reviewed.

Yes. Rio Hondo Dental Group in Downey states that it accepts Denti-Cal and Medi-Cal, and it is the office in our group for patients with that coverage. What your plan covers, whether you are currently eligible, and what you might owe for a specific treatment are questions the office answers for your situation when you call. They are not questions a blog post should guess at. Here are the questions that come up, and how to get a reliable answer to each one.

What Denti-Cal is, briefly

Denti-Cal is the dental side of Medi-Cal, California's health coverage program for eligible residents. Eligibility rules and covered services are set by the program, not by any dental office, and they can change. That is the reason this article does not list what is covered. The office checks your eligibility and benefits against the current rules when you call or arrive, and that check is the only version worth relying on.

Does Rio Hondo take Denti-Cal?

Rio Hondo Dental Group states on its own site that it accepts Denti-Cal and Medi-Cal, along with most PPO and HMO plans. It is the only one of our four offices that states this, so if you have Denti-Cal, Downey is where to call. Do not assume the same coverage applies at our Huntington Beach or Marina del Rey offices. Se habla español at Rio Hondo, for patients and families who prefer to handle these questions in Spanish.

How to confirm your coverage before you book

  1. Have your Medi-Cal card and identification nearby.
  2. Call Rio Hondo Dental Group at (562) 928-5559.
  3. Say you have Denti-Cal and ask whether the office can see you under it right now.
  4. Describe what you need, such as a cleaning, a toothache, or a child's checkup, and ask whether that visit is something they can provide under your coverage.
  5. Ask whether any part of the treatment needs approval from the program before it can be scheduled.
  6. Ask what, if anything, you would be expected to pay, and when.
  7. Ask what to bring to the first appointment.

Write the answers down, with the date and the name of the person you spoke to. Coverage questions are easier to resolve later when you have that note.

Common questions

Can my whole family be seen at the same office?

Rio Hondo practices family dentistry and sees patients across ages, from children's first visits to adults and seniors. Ask the office about scheduling several family members in one block, and confirm each person's coverage separately, since eligibility is per person, not per household.

What if I am not sure I am still eligible?

Tell the office. They can check your status when you call. You can also confirm directly with the program. Eligibility can lapse and be restored, so do not skip an appointment because you are unsure. Ask first.

What if I have a toothache right now?

Call the office and say so. Rio Hondo lists emergency dental care among its services. Describe the pain and any swelling, and the team will tell you how soon you need to be seen and what to do in the meantime. If you have facial swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, fever, or trouble swallowing, go to the emergency room first.

Does Denti-Cal cover treatments like implants, crowns, or Invisalign?

Ask the office about the specific treatment. Coverage differs by procedure and by the program's current rules, and we will not guess here. If a treatment you want is not covered, ask two follow-up questions: is there a covered alternative that addresses the same problem, and what would the uncovered option cost at this office in writing.

Do I need a referral?

Ask when you call. The answer depends on your plan type and the treatment, and the front desk handles this question every day.

What to bring to the first visit

  • Your Medi-Cal card and a photo ID.
  • A list of medications and any health conditions.
  • Prior dental records or X-rays if you have them, or the name of your previous dentist.
  • For a child, any paperwork the office asked for on the phone.

If something is not covered

There are two routes worth asking about. Rio Hondo publishes its own membership plan, a flat annual fee that includes routine visits and discounts other treatment at that office. It is not insurance, and you should ask the office directly how it interacts with your Denti-Cal coverage before buying it. For larger treatment, financing through the office's lending partners spreads the cost into monthly payments, subject to credit approval. Ask for the full cost in writing before starting either route.

One phone call settles most of this

One phone call answers most of what is on this page for your specific case. Call Rio Hondo Dental Group in Downey at (562) 928-5559, or request an appointment online and choose the Downey office. Note in the form that you have Denti-Cal, so the team can confirm coverage before your visit rather than at the front desk.
